GOLEM literally means inert matter. In the myth of the golem, a lump of clay was brought to life by using the word of God, and the power of the aleph-bet, the letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Stories about them are found in the Talmud. In times of persecution, the golem would be conjured up to serve as a protector. One of the major golem legends is the one attributed to Rabbi Judah Loew of Prague in the sixteenth century. The four elements of water, fire, earth, and air made up the golem.
GOLEMESS – PROTECTRESS FOR FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION – represents our belief that the future well–being lies in the continuous empowerment of the female creative force. She is a site–specific installation created out of earth from two LA–area cultural centers, which were under construction – the GETTY and SKIRBALL. GOLEMESS was created in collaboration with the Budapest–based artist, Levente Thury, at the American Jewish University [formerly the University of Judaism] for our participation in the SPIRITUAL MATTERS IN CONTEMPORARY ART series. Embedded within were fibers made by JULIA KEINER–FORCHHEIMER from indigenous Israeli material and laser images of ours from the Aleph-Bet and the Love Canal series.
Our GOLEMESS II installation, created for our DIALOGUES WITH THE DEITY show, was enhanced by an original, video/digital sound environment that was especially created for the exhibition. Our GOLEMESS III installation, IN THE BEGINNING was created for our participation in the Los Angeles Municipal Gallery, Barnsdall Art Park's ELEMENTS exhibition. Three video projections, two original digital SoundScapes and a computer website work station contributed to an interactive, spiritual environment that represented our vision of art in the 21st–century.
With freedom of expression under attack,
not only in this country but throughout the world,
it is our hope that GOLEMESS will serve to
protect the very pillars of our society.

At a moment in time, when so much is being hidden and/or revealed,
CoLabART has invoked their fourth Golemess who is emblematic
of the continuing empowerment of women and
hope for the future well–being of the Earth.
It is the newest work in their
evolving Kabbalah Series.
