Alienation and Assimilation:
Contemporary Images & Installations
Republic of Korea
Asian Art Museum - San Francisco, CA

Spring
2000

The Asian Art Museum is currently constructing an exciting new facility and will be moving from its shared space within the M.H. de Young Museum. This exhibition presented a timely look at the contemporary art scene in Korea. The video installations and photographically-derived pieces were very much on the current edge and San Francisco is fast becoming the leading exhibitor of media/time-based works with the recent showing of SFMOMA's "Bill Viola" retrospective and "Seeing Time, Selections from the Kramlich Collection of Media Art."

The de Young showed a model and small exhibit of their new building, necessitated by the cumulative earthquake damage. The Museum will be rebuilt in its bucolic setting within Golden Gate Park. San Francisco's burgeoning museum scene is impressive for its scope and vision that is aptly supported by the city's civil and philanthropic citizenry.
