The
American Century: Part II |
Spring 2000 |
The Whitney Museum of American Art's, "The American Century: Part II," surveyed fine arts, film and video as well as Internet works spanning the last 50 years of the 20th century. Overwhelming in size, the entire museum was turned into a commentary, decade-by-decade, of social, political and cultural concerns that defined post World War II America. In surveys such as this, there are always questions as to what was included and what was left out but taking that as a given, it clearly delineated the modernist and post-modernist differences while providing a pointer to where 21st century art might be headed. As is becoming more commonplace at the Whitney, Part II was organized by Lisa Phillips (now the director of NYC's New Museum) and a curatorial team. |
